Great Comet is an Americana-tinged indie rock project that emerged in 2022 as the brainchild of musician and songwriter Aaron New. After moving from his West Virginia home to Tacoma, Washington, New experienced a creative reawakening following years of stagnation brought on by life’s challenges. A snowboarding accident during the pandemic unexpectedly gave New the time to focus on songwriting, ultimately leading to the release of Great Comet’s debut album, All These Wasted Days, in 2023.

Drawing inspiration from artists like Jason Isbell, Tyler Childers, Sheryl Crow, and Foo Fighters, Great Comet pairs introspective, existential lyrics with dynamic, guitar-driven arrangements. New’s Appalachian roots shine through in the music, blending a nostalgic reverence for the sonic landscapes of classic rock and country with a modern indie rock edge. The result is a signature sound that resonates with fans searching for heartfelt storytelling and electric energy, both on record and on stage.

All These Wasted Days was a DIY triumph—self-written, produced, and recorded primarily in New’s apartment—with mixing and mastering by David Klug (Rozwell Kid). The album’s expansive sound sparked momentum for Great Comet, leading to performances across the Pacific Northwest, including Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Montana. Along the way, Great Comet’s dynamic live shows have earned the project a growing reputation and a dedicated fanbase.

Now poised for a breakout year, Great Comet is preparing to release their second full-length album, recorded between New’s home studio and Clear Track Studios in Florida. The band will also take its sound to a larger stage in 2025, with appearances planned during South by Southwest (SXSW) in Austin and Treefort Music Fest in Boise.

With its roots in Appalachian tradition and its eyes on a bigger future, Great Comet is a testament to independent artistry, resilience, and the power of music to build meaningful connections. For New, this project isn’t just about the music—it’s about sharing stories, creating community, and showing the world the beauty of Appalachian-inspired rock.
