“If Superchunk happened right now but also was as comfortable and real as a fresh set of Carhartt coveralls. If you’ve ever laid out under a night sky and thought about both the fragility of the human experience and the hugeness of the cosmos, Great Comet is for you. It just depends on how you’re viewing the sky that evening.– Kodi McKinney / The Club List

“(Great Comet) documents the duality of constant motion: the joy of connection, the sting of absence, and the fragile comfort of watching the world roll by outside a van window.– Add To Wantlist

Biography

Great Comet, the Americana-tinged indie rock project of songwriter Aaron New, has always been a study in motion. But with the release of the sonically expansive second album, Stranger Land, that motion has found a new direction—less of a frantic escape and more of a deliberate journey through the spaces between. The album is a powerful document of life on the road, of experiencing lasting love alongside devastating loss, and finding a home in the hushed moments of a world seen through a van window.

Where the 2023 debut, All These Wasted Days, was a cathartic burst of youthful angst, Stranger Land is its reflective counterpart. New exchanges pent-up energy for a nuanced exploration of deeper emotions, crafting a sound that is both more polished and more vulnerable. The album’s sonic evolution mirrors its geographic scope; recorded in studios at opposite ends of the country, its songs were written in the vast territory in between. The result is a sound that moves confidently from stripped-back, earnest songwriting to the driving, guitar-driven arrangements that have become a band signature, capturing a project in a powerful state of growth.

This newfound dynamic range is the core of Great Comet’s live show. On stage, the trio careens from anthemic, in-your-face rock to moments of pin-drop intimacy, commanding the attention of rooms full of strangers with quiet words and a single guitar. It’s a performance that honors the project’s discography while pushing it into electrifying new territory.

Originally hailing from West Virginia, New’s Appalachian roots still ground the project, blending a reverence for classic rock and country storytelling with a modern indie edge. Influences like Bahamas, Wilco, and Jason Molina are still present, but on Stranger Land, they feel less like guideposts and more like points of departure.

Stranger Land is more than an album; it’s the title of an ongoing story. It captures a pivotal moment for a project defined by change, a snapshot of an artist looking outward for answers and finding them in the journey itself. For Great Comet, the destination is still unknown, but the path forward has never been more compelling.
